What may trigger Third World War in Nigeria – UN official

What may trigger Third World War in Nigeria – UN official
 www.naijavoiceofthemasses.blogspot.com
A United Nations official said on Monday that degradation and competition over access to land and water may cause war in Nigeria.

“Land restoration is about security, reducing clashes between farmers and herdsmen over access to land and water, which may trigger the Third World War”, Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary of UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ankara, Turkey.

“More lives have been claimed in conflicts over access to land and water than Boko Haram.

“Every day, you have more conflicts between people that are competing for access to land and water.

“The root cause of the competition is access to natural resources,” the UN official told NAN on the sidelines of 2019 World Day to Combat Desertification in the Turkish capital.
World Day to Combat Desertification is celebrated every year globally on 17 June to promote good land stewardship for the benefit of present and future generations.

The UNCCD head said that growing population with growing demand on resources, coupled with Climate Change and reduction of available land resources, were root causes of most of the bloody conflicts.

“So, the tipping point was reached long time ago; and most of the time this is also combined with bad governance at national levels,” Thiaw said.

He said that land restoration could not be left in the hands of governments alone, and called for a review of the land tenure system in order to mobilise private business investment into the programme.

“This means there should be some concession for the business sector to participate in land restoration.

“It means that if a business restores a land, it gets concession on the land for 50 years or more so that the land remains restored rather than leave it barren.

“Otherwise, why would I invest in land restoration if I had no right on that land; if the land continues to belong to someone else, I won’t invest in it.

“Restoring land will reduce forced migration and keep people on the ground to generate their own incomes and live their own lives,” he said.

The UN official said that forced migration was the worst that could happen to countries where people were departing from.

“Most times, countries of destination see it as a problem, but countries they are departing from have a bigger problem because people involved in forced migration are educated and a big loss to their national economies,” he said.

Thiaw also said that although planting of trees was important and symbolic in land restoration, it was not the only solution to the problem.

“You can plant billions of trees, but unless you have good sensitisation, the trees will not grow or they clear off again.”

Nigeria vs France: Les Bleues coach, Diacre predicts FIFA Women’s World Cup
 www.naijavoiceofthemasses.blogspot.com

Head coach of France’s national women team, Corinne Diacre, has predicted that the Super Falcons of Nigeria will give her side a hard time when both sides clash in their final Group A fixture on Monday night at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Les Bleues will tackle the Thomas Dennerby’s side at the Stade de la Route de Lorient Stadium in France.

The hosts head to the match after defeating Norway 2-1 on Wednesday, while Nigeria defeated South Korea 2-0.

”As far as Nigeria team is concerned, I’m just looking at one match after another so I haven’t thought yet about anything concrete on Nigeria,” Diacre was quoted by Allnigeriasoccer as saying ahead of France’s clash against Nigeria.

”I am going to relax, think about it tomorrow, then we will reflect on things – what we can do, who may stay on the bench because we did have some injuries and let them recover.
”We are going to have to think about this long and hard.

”Norway gave us a hard time, Nigeria will probably do the same. For the time being, now we are just going to stay put and fight hard to win that match against Nigeria.”

Nigeria Does Not Deserve To Exist - IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has declared that Nigeria does not deserve to exist.
IPOB said any country that condones the persecution of the innocent but reward “cold blooded murderers like Fulani herdsmen, does not deserve to exist.”
The pro-Biafra group stated this while reacting to the non-release of its members held in custody across the country.
IPOB wondered why killer herdsmen have not been apprehended despite their atrocities.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the pro-Biafra group also warned Ohanaeze Ndigbo to organise their events to focus on referendum and not restructuring.
The statement reads, “Anything that could be seen to endorse the continued existence of one Nigeria will be peacefully resisted. Ohaneze Ndigbo is hereby warned to reorganise their event to focus on referendum and not restructuring. If they insist on discussing restructuring within Nigeria, they will encounter a worse fate.
“There are hundreds of innocent Biafrans in prisons and illegal detention centres all across Nigeria for no reason whereas not a single Fulani man has been incarcerated for the killing thousands of people by their herdsmen Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association.
“A society, nation or country that condones the persecution of the innocent- in this case Biafra agitators, whilst rewarding cold blooded murderers like Fulani herdsmen, does not deserve to exist.”

Rivers, UNICEF to partner for

Sustainable Development Goals in

the State

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has said that the state government would partner with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) to ensure the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals in the state.
Governor Wike stated this on Thursday during a courtesy visit on him by the UNICEF Country Representative Mr. Mohammed Fall to the Government House, Port Harcourt.
Governor Wike also directed relevant state government agencies to step up their performances for the expected improvement in key areas.
He said that the Rivers State Government has established structures to ensure improvements in the areas of immunisation, children and maternal healthcare, as well as sanitation.
The governor decried the fact that the state government is yet to attain 100 percent immunisation coverage, pointing out that the Ministry of Health and relevant agencies had been directed  to work round the clock to record improvement.
Said he, “Anything pertaining to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals will be tackled for the benefit of our people.
“We must progressively improve in all the areas where we are yet to attain 100 percent.  We must take vital steps to ensure we move at a pace  where everyone will be happy,” Governor Wike said.
The governor added that the State Government would engage in advocacy in the areas of breast feeding and immunisation.
Earlier, Mr. Fall commended Governor Wike for the regular payment of counterpart funds for critical United Nations programmes.
He solicited partnership with the Rivers State Government to deepen areas of cooperation for the attainment of greater results for the population.
He sought for the leadership of Governor Wike for consistent growth in the areas of the reduction of child and maternal mortality, improved immunization and breastfeeding, so that Rivers would be a reference point in Nigeria and the sub-region.
Fall regretted that the statistics for Nigeria in the areas of maternal mortality, child mortality and access to primary education were not  encouraging.  He said, if Nigeria attains the Sustainable Development Goals, it would impact positively on the continent.
