2019: Its Time for Me, Buhari, Others To Take A Bow For The Younger Generation To Take Over - Babangida

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babaginda has declared that now is the time for the older generation of Nigerian politicians to leave the stage for the younger ones.

Babangida said his generation had overstayed in the corridor of power.

He said this when a new political movement, the New Nigeria, led by its leader, Moses Siloko Siasia visited him at his Hilltop Residence in Minna.

The former military leader said he and other like-minds proposed as far as back as 1989 the possibility of handing over the country’s leadership to younger people.

He added that “some of us assumed leadership at a very young age.”

“The older generation must give way for the new one. We have become analogue but this is a digital age; so the young people should be supported to use their digital knowledge to move the country forward,” he averred.

The former Head of State said he was fascinated when the Not Too Young To Rule Bill was presented on the floor of the House of Representatives.

He said he had followed the ensuing debate since then, adding that “some of us believe in that aspiration and would support its realization.”

2019 Election: PDP  Secondus, Working Committee Meet With Babangida

 

The National chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, on Saturday visited former President of Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida in Minna.

Also, at the meeting were members of the party’s National working committee.

Recall that Secondus had also on Thursday visited ex-president Goodluck Jonathan.

This was disclosed by the PDP chairman on his twitter page.

He wrote, “PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus with NWC members in consultative meeting with former president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.”

 
However, the reason for the meeting was not disclosed.

Buhari to hosts Shagari, Babangida, Obasanjo, Jonathan, others today

President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to host the Council of State on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to Punch, the President, for the third time, will be hosting the meeting of the council that has all living former Presidents and Heads of Government as members since he assumed office in 2015.

Those expected at the meeting scheduled for the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa are former President Shehu Shagari; former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Others are, former military Heads of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.); Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.); Gen . Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.); as well as the former Chairman of the defunct Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan.

Vice-President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo will also attend the meeting alongside the Senate President and the Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

All living former Chief Justices of Nigeria; all the 36 state governors and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, are all members of the council.

The incessant killing and destruction of properties across the country by suspected herdsmen is expected to form part of discussions at the meeting.

The two earlier meetings of the council presided over by Buhari were held in October 2015 and September 2016.

The council has the constitutional duties of advising the President in the exercise of his powers with respect to national census, prerogative of mercy, award of national honours, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the National Judicial Council and the National Population Commission.
