Oyo police arrest fraudsters who hypnotised girl, raped her and
collected N1.4m from her
The Oyo State
Police Command have arrested two suspected fraudsters, Taiwo Salami (39)
and Kamorudeen Amusat (63), who hypnotised a sales girl and collected the N1.4
million her boss sent her to deposit in a bank. They raped her multiple times
after hypnotizing her and then collected the money found on her.
Parading the
suspects before newsmen yesterday Thursday June 13th, the
state Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, said the victim (names
withheld), was sent by her boss on May 6th at about 11:30 a.m. to deposit N1.4
million at a bank in Dugbe area of the city.
“On her way, she
was accosted by one of the suspects, Taiwo Salami, who hypnotised her, and
having lost her senses, she was taken to an abandoned house at Inalende area of
the city, where the cash was collected from her, while the suspects also
inflicted several injuries on her. On May 8th, the victim’s family
members reported her disappearance at the divisional police headquarters at
Mokola. She was later rescued and taken to the hospital for medical attention.
“The case was then
transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, and on June 7th,
following a tip-off, the suspects were arrested around Eleyele, and upon
interrogation, they confessed to the crime,” Olukolu said.
One of the
suspects, Salami, said when he saw the victim, he sensed she had money and that
was how he approached her and hyponotised her.
“She then followed
me to Inalende area, where she was kept in a room in an abandoned building and
the money collected from her.”
The police
commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of
investigation into their crime.
Oyo state establishes response
team on sexual offences, gender-based violence
The Oyo State
Government on Monday said that it has established a Sexual Offences and
Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Response Team in the Ministry of Justice to serve
as a nimble quick responder to sexual and gender-based offences.
The Attorney
General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Oluseun Abimbola, disclosed that SGBV
will serve as a first responder unit to address complaints arising from sexual
and gender-based violence.
Abimbola, while
speaking during the inauguration of the SGBV team, stated that the governor had
earlier signed into law the Violence Against Women Prohibition law in Oyo
State, to curb the increasing incidence of child defilement, domestic violence,
and related offences.
He noted that the
establishment of the SGBV team would give fire and bite to the enforcement
mechanism for this law and other related laws against such offences in the
state.
“It has become
clear that dealing with sexual-based offences would require an intervention
beyond the traditional structures to be able to provide counsel to victims,
provide professional medical assistance to extract evidence timeously, offer
legal services and a shelter where necessary for victims, among other things.
“The SGBV team will
serve as a one-stop shop to deal with the multiple issues arising from such
offences.”
He charged the team
to hit the ground running immediately by setting up a helpline for quick alerts
by complainants, open a sex offenders register to document and deter these
heinous crimes and ultimately midwife the establishment of a sexual offences
and Gender-Based Violence Referral Center which would eventually house the unit
and warehouse all the offered services.
Abimbola said that
the team is a collaboration of ministries and agencies including Ministries of
Justice, Women Affairs & Child Welfare, Health, the Nigerian Police, Legal
Aid Council, Civil Society, NBA, and the Media, with representatives drawn from
these agencies and MDAs on the team.
The Attorney
General urged the team to shun traditional and cultural nuances that may hamper
the work of the team, but to be decisive and courageous in implementing the
laws on the subject matter in order to cure the mischief.
Coordinator of the
team, Mrs. Modupe Awosemusi, while speaking, thanked the Governor for approving
the establishment of the team, promising to discharge their responsibilities
judiciously.
Governor Abiola
Ajimobi of Oyo State on Monday said that the The First Technical University,
Ibadan, belonged to the state government wholly and not any individual,
including himself.
Ajimobi made the
clarification while receiving the state’s traditional rulers led by the Alaafin
of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
The monarchs, were on a courtesy visit to his (Ajimobi) office.
Other traditional
rulers during the visit were Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola; Aseyin of
Iseyin, Oba Abdul-Ganiy Salawudeen; Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis
Olusola; and Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Owolabi Olakulehin.
Ajimobi, while
speaking used the occasion to avail the royal fathers of his administration’s
achievements in education, agriculture, peace, security and infrastructure,
among others in the last eight years.
He said the state
government had not expended any fund on the establishment of the university
till date, as all the structures in the institution’s premises were built by
foreign donors and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Ajimobi said: “Let
me use this opportunity to dispel the rumour going around that I am the owner
of The First Technical University, Ibadan. People are expected to talk,
especially when they lack proper information, but if we fail to dispel the
rumour, it may stick and become the truth. I want to say without any
equivocation that I do not own the Technical University, Ibadan. It belongs to
Oyo State Government wholly. It is easy for people to come up with such rumour
because of the successful establishment of the university.
“It is the first of
its kind in Nigeria, and we are happy that we succeeded in achieving this in
our time. Nobody believed we could achieve it, especially during a period the
country was grappling with economic challenges. Oyo State has had no financial
input in the establishment of the university till date. All what you see there
were done by lovers of the state, indigenes living abroad, international
institutions and the CBN.
“I give gratitude
to the Almighty Allah for giving me the opportunity, in spite of my natural
deficiencies as a human being.
“To serve humanity
through the governance of Oyo State, which is unarguably the intellectual
capital of Nigeria with highly politically-sophisticated people, is a rare
privilege. I appreciate you all our royal fathers and indeed, the entire people
of the state immensely, because you made it possible for us to govern the state
with uncommon success in the last eight years.”
Oba Adeyemi, while
reacting, said there was no institution that could correctly appraise the
achievements of any administration in any state than traditional rulers.
He said the
election of Ajimobi for two consecutive terms was a testimony of people’s love
and support for him and their acknowledgement of his administration’s success
in some critical areas like education, health and infrastructure.
Oba Adeyemi said:
“I believe very much that if there is any agency that can make a correct
appraisal of any government’s performance in any state, no agency is better
placed than the traditional rulers in such a state.
“The reason is not
far-fetched. Among the traditional rulers, there are those who have experienced
some administrations, which qualifies them to make fair assessment of all. In
my own case, and with gratitude to God for my longevity and the good people of
Oyo for their support and cooperation at all times, I have experienced many
administrations, both military and civilian.
“Let me start from
a non-controversial statement of fact as far as Governor Ajimobi is concerned.
It is that till date, he is the longest serving governor to occupy the Agodi
Government House since the Western Region days. There can be no better
empirical testimony of his acceptability by the people of the State than that.
I doubt if anybody can deny the fact that the last eight years have been marked
by peace in the state. He is always in constant touch with all security
agencies, with his ears literally on the ground for vital information.”
The Oyo State wing
of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) today (Monday) commenced an indefinite
strike due to delay in payment of salaries of primary school teachers and other
requests.
The union said the
strike became necessary due to the inability of the state government to meet
its demands.
NUT had last week, issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Oyo State Government
to clear and settle the backlogs of salaries owed its members.
The union, while
lamenting over unpaid salaries of primary school teachers, gave the state
government 72 hours notice or go on indefinite strike if the situation is not
reversed.
NUT Chairman,
Comrade Z.T Adedoyin and Secretary, Comrade N.M. Abdullahi, in a joint
statement issued after a meeting of the union, lamented over complementary
allowances of promotions of the teachers.
The union also
listed issues worrying the members of the union as non-implementation of the
approval and accompany promotion benefits to the primary school teachers by the
Oyo State Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC), delay
in payment of salary to primary school teachers, delay in the promotion of
grade level 14 to 15, continued withholding of 2018 leave grant and delay in
the clearance of teachers allegedly accused of illegal promotion.
The teachers said
that they were commencing the strike today because, efforts made by the state
government to persuade the teachers, met brick walls.
We gathered
that the state government had invited the leaders of the union to a parley on
May 15 but no deal was reached.
The NUT
acknowledged that its leadership met with the state Head of Service and the
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on May 15 during
which both government functionaries made passionate appeal to them to shelve
the proposed strike.
The union, however,
but stated that their appeal could not change anything because none of their
demands was met.
The teachers are
downing tools over delay in the promotion of primary school teachers from
salary grade level 14 to 15, as well as delay in payment in payment of salary
of primary school teachers.
