A man has been
arrested in connection with the murder of a female student of Nnamdi
Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state.
22-year-old Chinasa
Pauline Agbata, who was a 300 Level Linguistics student of the institution, was
murdered in March this year and her body was dumped at the gate of the campus.
The Public
Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, Haruna Mohammed,
told newsmen that one Onudili Somtochukwu, 25, has been arrested following
a discreet investigation.
He said the suspect
was assisting the police with useful information that could help in solving the
murder.
Secondary school pupil dies after drinking pack of juice laced with
Sniper in Lagos
A student of
the Cedar College, Baruwa, in the Ipaja area of Lagos State, Favour
Ekemedili, has died after she drank a pack of juice laced
with Sniper on Thursday, May 30th during school hours.
According to
reports, the deceased, Favour Ekemedili, left her home on the said day and was
in class receiving the day's teaching with her classmates when she got up,
went to her bag, brought out the pack of juice and started drinking it.
Shortly after she drank some of it, she threw the juice pack away and went to
her seat. Some minutes later, Favour began complaining of having stomach pains.
Her classmates rushed her to the school's sick bay. Her classmates informed the
nurse on duty that Favour began complaining of stomach ache after she drank the
pack of juice she brought to school.
They searched for
the juice pack she threw away and brought it with the remaining content to
the nurse. Upon examination, the nurse found out it was smelling of the
popular insecticide, Sniper. Immediately she raised alarm and Favour was rushed
to the General hospital in the area.
Favour was later
referred to the Lagos state University Teaching Hospital where she died on the
same day at about 6pm.
The mother of the
deceased, Nkem Ekemedili, said she has handed over the case to God as there is
nothing that can be done if she fights with the school. She blamed the school
for not monitoring her daughter who was in their care at the time of the
unfortunate incident.
Confirming the
incident, the Lagos state police command spokesperson, Bala Elkana, in a
statement released yesterday Sunday June 2nd, said the homicide department of
the school is currently investigating the matter.
“On Thursday, May
30, 2019, around 5.40pm, the Ipaja Police Station received a complaint from the
Cedar College, Baruwa, that on the same date around 9am, one Favour Ekemedili,
an SS1 pupil complained of severe stomach ache and was rushed to the school’s
sickbay. The school’s sickbay immediately moved her to the general hospital,
which in turn referred her to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital,
where she was admitted for medical attention.
“Her parents were
contacted by the school authority. She died around 6pm while receiving
treatment. Her friends, who witnessed the incident, stated that the stomach
ache started after the girl took a beverage. On a close check of the bottle, it
was discovered that it contained an insecticide known as Sniper and not the
beverage. The chemical substance was taken for laboratory testing. Homicide
detectives from the SCIID are investigating the case.” the statement read

University Student who was arrested and detained by the school since January over a social media
post cries out
Mr Christopher Onyejekwe has reached out to the general public to cry out and plead with the
authorities of Madonna University Okija, to release his son,
Benedict Onyejekwe who he claimed has been arrested and detained
since January 19th, 2019 for alleged 'cyber crime'.
According to him, his son was arrested for describing the school
authorities as 'evil minded' people in a Facebook post which the school termed
as 'cyber crime'.
In a telephone chat Mr Christopher Onyejekwe said,
'please I need to tell the whole world about this situation, my son has
been detained and dragged to court since January for calling them 'evil minded'
people. They say its cyber crime and even when a judge granted us bail, they convinced the police not to release my son. They are doing all these to
intimidate us because they know I am sick and don't have money to fight them'.
Back in March 2019, another Nigerian Lady, Goodness Chidinma,
took to twitter to accuse authorities of Madonna University Okija, of
getting her brother, Chijioka Nnamani, arrested over a Facebook post.
According to her tweets, Chijioke, an alumni of the school had
published a post on his Facebook page in January this year which
the school authority found unappealing and petitioned the police.
University Of Calabar VC Warns Students Against Cultism, Indecent Dressing
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Zana Akpagu has
warned new students to desist from cultism and other forms of crimes.
He said that appropriate sanctions would be meted out on students found
belonging to nocturnal organizations and cult groups.
Akpagu gave the warning at the 40th matriculation ceremony of the
institution, which involved over 9,200 students for the 2017/2018 academic
session.
He noted that the occasion marked the official entry of every new student
into the higher institution of learning since it was a statutory gathering to
formally admit deserving and qualified candidates that had been offered
admission into the institution.
He further said that the ceremony also signified the conclusion of the
admission processes for the year, disclosing a total number of 9200 candidates
were offered admission from a total number of 37, 278 candidates who applied to
the University of Calabar.
Prof Akpagu informed the freshmen that they were not expected in any
manner to socialize with any association that had been proscribed by the
University such as the infamous “secret cults”, noting that the penalties
misconducts were contained in the University Handbook.
While advising them to show respect to colleagues and staff of the
University so as to make their stay fruitful and productive, Prof Akpagu urged
them to be modest and decent in their dressing and approach to issues.
The Vice Chancellor assured students of maximum security in the
University, while appealing that they should not hesitate to report any
suspicious activity to the Dean, Students Affairs, Security Officers and the
Courses’ Advisers.
According to him, the institution was working assiduously in ensuring
that the University was put on the global map, hence, going into collaboration
and linkages that were yielding very positive dividends to the university
community.
He disclosed that the university is on the verge of achieving
uninterrupted power supply via an ongoing Solar Energy Project with the German
Government, including Scholarship awarded to 47 deserving Students with a
commitment to make it an annual event by the people Republic of China through
her Embassy in Nigeria as well as the introduction of Korean Studies into the
Curriculum of the Bassey Andah Centre for African and Asian Studies.
OAU Professor Under Fire For Demanding Sex From Student
The Chairman, Congress of University Academics at the Obafemi Awolowo
University, Dr Niyi Sumonu, has spoken on the case involving a professor at
the university, Richard Akindele, accused of requesting for sex from a female
student in order to raise her scores.
Professor Akindele was on Monday fingered in sex allegations after leaked
conversation between him and the student emerged online.
In the said phone conversation, the professor could be heard asking the
student to have sex with him five times to upgrade her scored from 33 to a pass
mark.
Reacting, Sumonu asked the university to investigate the matter.
He said, “If it is established that this is true, the person, who
perpetrated that does not belong to the academic environment. We are supposed
to mould the lives of the students – males and females.”
Also Reacting , the immediate past Deputy Coordinator of NANS in the
South West, Mr. Saheed Afolabi, called for a thorough investigation into the
matter.
He said, “This is becoming too rampant these days and I want the
management of the OAU to investigate this. Although we are still making efforts
to know the female student, this should not be swept under the carpet.”
The Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, had earlier
stated that the university would set up a committee to ascertain the veracity
of the telephone
conversation as the matter was a serious one.
Olanrewaju was quoted as saying“We have listened to the audio and we cannot
conclude on it now because this is the age of ICT; anything can happen. The
university has a way of dealing with such.
“First and foremost, we will set up a committee to determine the veracity
or otherwise of the conversation to establish authenticity of the characters
involved. If those involved happen to be our lecturer and student as it is
portrayed, the university has a machinery of dealing with such.
“Let me make it clear, OAU has zero tolerance for sexual intimidation,
sexual harassment and sexual coercion. So, we will not accept it from staff to
students; from the workers; from superiors to subordinates and even from
students to students.”
