Kwara: Gov. Abdulrazaq reveals what he’ll do over civil servants’ political leanings, N30,000 minimum wage

 

The Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has assured civil servants in the state that he will not witch-hunt anyone for his or her political convictions.

He gave the assurance on Thursday in Ilorin, the state capital, during his maiden meeting with civil servants in the state.

“We would not label anyone. We will carry everybody along and promote a culture of transparency and independence.

“We want Kwara to regain its rightful place, particularly in the North where it used to be the number one in terms of education and so on,” Abdulrazaq said.

The Governor promised to ensure prompt payment of salaries, and also to pay the minimum wage after due consultations with the civil servants and proper assessment of the financial situation of the state.

“We will pay May salary almost immediately. We want to get to a place where there are no backlog of salary and pensions.

“We’ll discuss the minimum wage. The intention is to pay, but we need to sit down and resolve a few issues.

“There has been so much plundering of the state resources, but we will rise above all that.

“We’ll ride on your back to get things done while your welfare is taken care of,” he said.

The governor declared that his government would strive to plug loopholes and reduce overhead costs through prudent management of resources.

He also promised to address the infrastructural deficit in the state and create wealth through private enterprise.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was attended by top party leaders led by APC chairman, Mr Bashir Bolarinwa; Head of the Civil Service, Mrs Susan Oluwole; permanent secretaries, directors, and other senior civil servants in the state.

 As workers in Ekiti State gathered at the Oluyemi Kayode stadium in Ado Ekiti, the state capital to celebrate May 1, the state’s chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Sola Adigun has begged Governor Kayode Fayemi to promptly pay the seven months outstanding salaries of secondary school teachers employed in September , 2018, by the immediate past Governor Ayodele Fayose’s administration.

While delivering his speech at the occasion, he said: ” Your Excellency, we want you to look into the plight of workers whose salaries had been stopped for some months. We shall appreciate your Excellency if the outcome of the panel that handled the issues of irregularities in service can be released and labour is carried along.”

Speaking further on the minimum wage of N30,000 just approved by the Federal Government for workers in the country, Adigun praised Governor Fayemi’s commitment to paying the new wag.

He added: “it is worth mentioning at this juncture, the renewed commitment of your administration to the welfare of wormers and people, as manifested in your resolve to clear backlog arrears if salary, pension and gratuity. It is also gladdening to know that you are one d the very first Governors who conceded publicly to the implementation of the new minimum wage. Your approval if Car and Housing loan for workers is quite commendable, while we also take due note of your pro- masses policies, mist notably in the area of education.”

The TUC chairman further urged the Governor to ensure that the implementation of the new minimum is commenced with immediate effect.

Governor Fayemi, who was represented by his deputy, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, assured the workers that the government would do everything possible to ensure that the workers begin to enjoy the minimum wage in Ekiti State very soon.

Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to devise ways of imposing ‘no fly’ sanctions for any Governor, Industrialist, CEOs who deliberately refused to implement the new National Minimum Wage recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sani said this while celebrating with Nigerian workers on the occasion of the 2019 May Day.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Sani wrote: “A revolutionary salute to the Nigerian Worker on workers day. The NLC & the Aviation workers must devise ways of imposing ‘no fly’ sanctions for any Governor or Industrialist or CEOs who deliberately refused to implement the 30k Minimum wage.”

We had reported last month that President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Minimum Wage Repeal and Reenactment Bill, 2019 into law.

Senator Ita Enang, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate) disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Senate had on March 19, approved N30,000 as the new national minimum wage with an appeal to the Federal Government to expedite action on assent and implementation.

“This makes it compulsory for all employers of labour in Nigeria to pay their workers the sum of N30,000 and this excludes persons who are employing less than 25 workers; persons who work in a ship which sail out of jurisdiction; persons who are in other kinds of regulated employments are excepted by the Act.

“It also gives the workers the right if you are compelled by any circumstance to accept salary that is less than 30,000 for you to sue your employers to recover the balance.

“It authorises the minister of labour and any person nominated by the minister of labour or any person designated by the minister of labour in any ministry, department or agency to on your behalf take action in your name against such employer to recover the balance of wages.”

President Buhari Will Start Paying Minimum Wage - Oshiomole Confirms

A former governor of Edo, Adams Oshiomhole, says President Muhammadu Buhari is serious about implementation of a new minimum wage.

Oshiomhole buttressed that federal government will start paying the new wage by the third quarter of 2018.

He stressed that Buhari’s resolve is not a political gimmick to win the 2019 general elections.

Oshiomhole said there was already a case to review the wages prior to the election, adding that he was not bothered about when the implementation of the new minimum wage would start.

According to him, he is only bothered by the fact that some workers in some states are still not paid the current N18,000 minimum wage in use.

“As governor of Edo, I increased the minimum wage from N18,000 to N25,000 a month for the least paid worker”, he told NAN

“And I did that to dismiss and to close the debate whether a higher minimum wage is desirable.

“Rather than going to be giving a lecture on why a higher minimum wage is inevitable, I thought it is better to use my executive power to increase the minimum wage and to pay it.

“Not only did I pay it for as long as I was governor, my successor has continued to pay it.

“And Edo has continued to deliver on infrastructure and on its mandate to the admiration of its residents,’’ the former governor said.
