Championship play-offs: Aston Villa pip West Brom to final spot

 

Aston Villa are through to the Championship play-off final, after seeing off rivals West Brom, following a penalty shoot-out on Tuesday night.

Villa came into the second leg of their semi-final tie leading 2-1.

Craig Dawson scored the only goal at Hawthorns to level on aggregate and send the tie all the way to penalties.

Jed Steer then saved two penalties for Villa, while Tammy Abraham converted the final kick to send his side to Wembley for the second consecutive season.

They will face Leeds or Derby, who meet at Elland Road for their second leg on Wednesday night, with Leeds leading 1-0 on aggregate.

English Championship play-off: Aston Villa, Leeds United win first legs

 

Leeds United striker, Kemar Roofe, scored in the second half to seal a 1-0 victory over hosts, Derby County, in the first leg of their Championship playoff semi-final on Saturday.

Roofe, who had struck in both league clashes against Derby this season, collected a fine cross from winger Jack Harrison and tucked the ball past goalkeeper Kelle Roos, to give his team a slim advantage in the tie.

Derby were awarded a penalty after Harrison appeared to foul Jayden Bogle in the 77th minute, only for referee Craig Pawson to overturn his decision and award a free kick to the visitors after consulting the linesman.

The teams meet at Elland Road in Wednesday’s second leg.

In the other game, Aston Villa defeated West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in the first leg of the other semi-final earlier on Saturday.

The return leg is at The Hawthorns on Tuesday.

The finalists will meet at Wembley on May 27 to decide who will join Norwich City and Sheffield United in the Premier League next season.
